Vision Statement for Personal, Social and Health Education

Life to the Full Plus

At St. Gerard’s School we recognise that PSHE and Citizenship are closely related to RE and reflect the teachings of the Catholic Church.  Our vision is to provide a Faith community in which children can learn to respect themselves and others and take responsibility for their own actions. Fundamental to our school’s values and practice is the principle of sharing the responsibility for the education of children with our parents and governors.

We endeavour that our PSHE (Personal, social, health and economic) curriculum will help enable our children to become confident, independent members of society with an awareness of their rights and responsibilities as individuals and as part of a diverse society.

Our vision is to create a happy, purposeful and supportive environment where children are enabled to become successful learners, develop their full potential and achieve the highest educational standards they can.  Our vision statement reflects a passionate commitment to learning and recognition of the uniqueness of individual learners.  We are driven by our desire to offer the best possible education for our pupils in partnership with parents, the Church and the local community

                                                             Intent

At St Gerard’s, we use the ‘Ten:Ten ‘Life to the Full Plus’  programme to support us in delivering PSHE.

The TenTen programme (Life to the Full Plus) adopts a spiral curriculum approach so that as a child goes through the programme year-after-year, the learning will develop and grow, with each stage building on the last. (Please see our RSE and Health Education Page for details of Life to the Full Plus.)

                                                 Implementation

What do schools have to teach in PSHE Education?

According to the National Curriculum, every school needs to have a broad and balanced curriculum that:
• promotes the spiritual, moral, social, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school;
• prepares pupils at the school for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life;
• promotes British values.

How we teach PSHE at St Gerard’s Catholic Primary School

‘Ten:Ten ‘Life to the Full Plus’ programme supports us in delivering PSHE, we deliver weekly lessons to all classes.

Through a structured curriculum, interactive lessons, and engaging activities, students learn practical strategies to navigate challenges effectively, foster strong relationships, and cultivate a growth mindset. The program integrates mindfulness techniques, emotional literacy exercises, and social-emotional learning principles to promote holistic well-being.

SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural) development opportunities are mapped throughout. All of these pieces of learning are brought together to form a cohesive picture, helping children to know and value who they are and understand how they relate to other people in the world. All classes also match their teaching of SMSC to enrichment activities within their classroom environments and lessons.

Impact

By the end of their academic journey at St Gerard’s, our children will demonstrate confidence and awareness about their wellbeing and will be prepared for the challenges, opportunities, and responsibilities of adult life. The PSHE curriculum will have a positive impact on learners’ health and wellbeing and their ability to achieve, and this will play a crucial part in meeting these obligations.

Life to the Full is intended to be a partnership between home, school and church. Catholic schools have a fantastic partnership working with parents and their local Church, so this programme is intended to fit in with and support those partnerships.

The Online Parent Portal is a tool that provides parents with information about the Life to the Full Plus programme content that their children will be following in school. They can also access suggestions for further activity and discussion at home linked to the sessions taught in school.
